Neuro: Neuro originated from the Greek word “Neuron”. It says that our behaviour is the result of a neurological process. It is a function of the neurological activity that initiates from the information received through the senses. The interpretation that we give to received data is the one that shapes our perception.

Linguistics: This word is derived from the Latin word “Lingua”. It indicates that the neurological process is represented, sequenced, and transmitted through communication based on words or language. It recognises the part that language occupies as a representation of our mental organisation.

Programming: It is a term that refers to the process of organising the components of a system. It refers to the established mental programs that run our thinking and behaviour. We can relate it to a computer that would be programmed to perform certain functions.

Origin of NLP

In the early 1970s, John Grinder, who was an associate professor at the University of California, teamed up with one of his students, Richard Bandler. Both of them wanted to know why certain people were more successful than others in their respective fields were. Therefore, they asked certain questions to some therapists. 

They met some of the most successful people therapists. They tried to figure out the secret of their success and looked for the common principles all of them followed. 

However, the therapists did not share the raw data of their behaviour. However, with Grinder’s expertise in linguistics, both of them figured out a similar pattern in the therapists’ behaviour. With the help of language-based models, they analysed the patterns of behaviour. This is how NLP was born.
